OVERVIEW :
Zanzibar Island has got many attractive places to visit one of them is this natural forest which is Zanzibar national park.The forest was used as a national forest from 1996 where the villagers start keeping the forest as the national park which is now one of the famous forest in Zanzibar Island as it has more interresting things that one can see all these.The Jozani forest lies about 35 km south east of Zanzibar township in Zanzibar south region. It is narrow neck of land between the Chwaka bay in the north and Uzi bay to the south. It contains about 100 species from a total of 43 families.It has a gazzetted area over 2512 ha that includes the whole ground water forest,coral rags forest and salt marsh area.Although until recently only the forest was gazzetted,the area together with adjacent Chwaka Bay forest have been converted into a reserve known as Jozani Chwaka Bay Conservations ( JCBCA ). The recent move has been added the rich magroves forest making the ecosystem the largest conservation area in Zanzibar.Commercial activities at Jozani started in 1920s but in the 1940 the colonial government purchased 199 ha of the forest from the private enterpreneur and converted into a reserve after years of commercial activities in the neighbouring areas. Jozani was officially declared a forest reserve in 1960 but the recent expansions were made in 1984 when the most of the surrounding areas were gazzetted hence bringing the total area to 2512 ha . The inclussion of Chwaka Bay magroves forest which has been recognized since 1946 and managed by 8 villages of Cwaka,Pongwe,Uroa,Marumbi,Mapopwe,Charawe,Ukongoroni and Michamvi make management of the new conservation area a unique participatory model.In Jozani forest you can differrent trees such as Mahagoon trees,Magrove trees and other trees you can also see several animals such as black monkeys,red monkeys,ader's duikers,bush baby,squirrel and other so you will discover and experience differrent thing during the walking trip in Jozani forest.
